The Modules Explained
Core Mandatory - $99.00 for suite or $19.00 per individual modules
The following modules have been designed to provide the remote and rural health practitioner with the necessary information in order to provide a flexible learning opportunity that will enhance current knowledge of clinical and discretionary competencies in professionally agreed organisational requirements.
Individual Modules
1) Basic Life Support
This module demonstrates the process of DR ABCD and its application.
2) Building a Respectful Workplace
Unfortunately, workplace bullying can occur in all sorts of work environments, even in remote workplaces. Workplace bullying is "the repeated less favourable treatment of a person by another or others in the workplace, which may be considered unreasonable and inappropriate workplace practice.
After completing the online components you should be able to:
- Identify what is and is not bullying
- Understand your rights and responsibilities regarding bullying in the workplace
- Know what to do and who to approach, if you are bullied
- Make an informed decision about how they want to build and/or maintain a Respectful Workplace
3) Cultural Awareness
It is no surprise that many health professionals have little or no knowledge of the post-colonial legacies and cultural values of Aboriginal people. The impact of poor understanding undermines respect and compounds communication barriers. In recognition of this and the importance of two-way communication in health care the linked package endeavours to address these issues.
The package, inclusive of information, videos, activities and links to further resources, consists of five self directed learning modules:
- Culture, self and diversity
- Aboriginal history
- Working with Aboriginal people
- Providing clinical services
- Improving cultural security
4) Fire Awareness
This module has been designed to provide the health practitioner with the necessary information in order to provide a flexible learning opportunity that will enhance current knowledge of fire prevention, safety and preparedness.
5) Introduction to Infection Control
Preventing the transmission of infectious organisms and managing infection is essential to providing high quality health care and a safe working environment for all health care workers.
This module has been designed to provide the health practitioner with the necessary information in order to provide a flexible learning opportunity that will enhance current knowledge of infection control in the remote context.
6) Managing Difficult Behaviours
This module has been designed to provide the health practitioner with the necessary information in order to provide a flexible learning opportunity that will enhance current knowledge of managing difficult behaviour that is culturally sensitive and appropriate in the remote context.
The module includes the following: -
- What constitutes challenging or difficult behaviour
- Different kinds of challenging behaviour and the causes
- Help to recognize the potential for aggressive behaviour when dealing with people
- How to plan for effective responses in situations of challenging behaviour
- A range of strategies for dealing with different kinds of challenging behaviour
- Communication and self-management skills that can help in dealing with challenging behaviour
- Help to protect self and others when dealing with difficult behaviour
7) Manual Handling including Ergonomics
Manual Handling
The first learning package has been designed to provide the health practitioner with the necessary information in order to provide a flexible learning opportunity that will enhance current knowledge of manual handling theory.
It will takes you through the core elements of Manual Handling.
The core elements are as follows:
- Definitions and Management Overview
- Manual Handling Injuries and Basic Anatomy
- Principles of Manual Handling
- Manual Handling Legislation
Ergonomics
The second learning package has been compiled to assist the rural and remote health practitioner in reinforcing knowledge of ergonomics and its application to office and clinic practice set up to prevent manual handling hazards.
8) Medication Calculation - Adults, Paediatrics and Mental Health
The ability to do accurate and quick drug calculations is an essential skill for nurses and midwives, yet many practitioners are unsure of their mathematical abilities.
The assessments will allow you to "fine tune" your mathematical skills, learn the essentials and practice simple calculations.

Remote Emergency Care
The following modules/programs have been developed to ensure a capacity for remote health professionals to maintain clinical currency in emergency care in-between the face-to-face REC/AREC courses.
Advance Life Support Program - Included in the cost of the AREC course or $150.00
The online ALS course will provide the health practitioner with an opportunity to undertake a structured, flexible, self-paced course conducive to learning, which will assist in the achievement of ALS competency
Module One - Cardiac anatomy and physiology
Module Two - Basic life support (danger, response, airway, breathing, circulation and defibrillation)
Module Three - Airway Management
Module Four - 12 Lead ECG
Module Five - Arrhythmia Interpretation
Module Six - Defibrillation care, use and hazards of the defibrillation unit
Module Seven - Pharmacological interventions
Module Eight - Post Resuscitation Care
Module Nine - OSH issues and legal, ethical and professional aspects
Case Studies - Included in the cost of the REC course

The following modules/programs have been developed to ensure a capacity for remote health professionals to maintain clinical currency in maternity care in-between the face-to-face MEC/Midus courses
Aboriginal Health Workers
First Aid Program - $99.00
Online program includes 4 modules
Module 1 - Overview of Primary Survey and Systems including review of manual handling principles
Module 2 - Basic Life Support (DRcallABCD including secondary survey principles) and review of communication and patient transfer
Module 3 - Trauma
Module 4 - Medical Emergencies
Each module has a power point presentation (with voice over going over presentation slides with extra script from manual) and text/notes from a manual.
There is only one theory assessment online (plus a practice assessment) at the end of all the modules (approx 20 multi-choice, true/false questions)
Practical competency either obtained by attending the AHW REC course or separate arrangement with the Online Program Coordinator
Clinical Upskilling in the Bush - $99.00 for suite or $19.00 per individual modules
These modules have been developed to facilitate access to clinical education for those remote health professionals who require clinical knowledge and support until they are able attend a REC/AREC course.
Individual Modules
1) 12 Lead ECG
This module has been compiled to assist the remote/rural practitioner in gaining theoretical knowledge in interpreting 12 Lead ECG's. Packages 1 - 6 cover:
- 12 Leads (Lead Groups - Identify the groups on a 12 Lead ECG)
- Blood Supply (Coronary Arteries - Relate these groups to coronary artery anatomy)
- Myocardial Changes (Ischaemia & MI Changes - Recognise the changes caused by ischaemia, injury and infarction)
- Axis Determination (Axis Determination - Determine the electrical cardiac axis using the quadrant and hexaxial systems)
- Bundle Branch Block (Normal Conduction & Bundle Branch Block - Recognise the normal cardiac conduction pathway - Identify right and left bundle branch block)
- Chamber Enlargement (Recognise atrial and ventricular chamber enlargement)
2) Airway Management
This module gives a brief overview of anatomy and physiology of airways and breathing in relation to airway management adjuncts including:
- Indications
- Contraindication and precautions
- Equipment
- Patient preparation
- Procedure
- Complications
3) Arrhythmia Interpretation
This module has been compiled to assist the remote/rural practitioner in gaining the theoretical knowledge to interpret arrhythmia's. Packages 1- 6 cover:
- Identify waveforms of an ECG
- Identify five types of sinus arrhythmia's, list the causes and treatment
- Identify five types of atrial arrhythmias, list the causes and treatment
- Identify three types of junctional rhythms, list the causes and treatment
- Identify four types of atrioventricular blocks, the causes and treatment
- Identify six types of ventricular, list the causes and treatment
4) Defibrillation
This module takes you through defibrillation use, care and safety precautions to support the learner through the application of a defibrillator during a cardiac arrest
5) Intravenous Cannulation
This learning package has been compiled to assist the remote/rural practitioner in gaining the theoretical knowledge on insertion of an intravenous cannula.
At the completion of this package the participant will be able to:
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of the vascular system
- List the indications for IV therapy
- Identify potential complications of IV therapy
- Utilise appropriate nursing measures to prevent complications and propose solutions to any complication of IV therapy
- Outline the aims of patient education regarding the procedure and subsequent therapy
- Accurately conducts a patient history and assessment prior to commencing therapy
- Demonstrate an understanding of the legal issues relating to health practitioners performing IV cannulation
Clinical Practical Competency - To be obtained by local assessors (assessment sheet included in this package) or as part of the Remote Emergency Care Course through CRANAplus First Line Emergency Courses
