Health care in remote Australia poses particular problems to practitioners who provide the day to day and emergency health care service. Harsh climate, dispersed population, poor transport, geographical isolation and great distances, mean that the time delay, resources and support available are considerably different to rural and metropolitan Australia. This course aims to meet the specific needs of these practitioners.
Aim:
To enable health practitioners to develop knowledge and skills essential to provide emergency care and treatment in common emergency situations encountered in the remote setting. To provide the remote and rural practitioners with knowledge to promote confidence to deliver safe and quality care to the patient.
Eligibility:
This course is available to Registered nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Aboriginal Health Workers, Torres Strait Islander Health Workers, Ambulance Officers and isolated practice G.P's. Undergraduate students are not eligible for this course.
Graduates of the course will be able to :
- Demonstrate the principles of management for the acutely ill and traumatic patients who may present in the remote health care setting.
- Describe and implement a systematic patient assessment and subsequent secondary survey.
- Incorporate advanced life support skills in the management of the critically ill patient.
- Explain the different requirements of ill or injured patients through the life span including the unique differences in managing paediatric and obstetric patients
- Demonstrate the application of the principles of managing an incident involving multiple casualties.
- Participate in all skill stations and demonstrate competence in the specified clinical skills under the categories of the airway, breathing, circulation and spinal immobilisation.
The course material covers a variety of aspects of emergency care and has been collated from a variety of sources. It has been designed to assist health practitioners as a resource to complement practice. This course material has not been designed as a procedure manual and all procedures are recommendations only. Individual practitioners are still bound by their professional and organisational regulations.
We hope you find this course challenging, informative and relevant to your management of the critically ill or injured.
The Remote Emergency Care course is endorsed by CRANAplus Inc and the Royal College of Nursing, Australia and attracts 20 CNE points.Sample Program / Course Content:
